A QUEER FIX.
An amusing-incident happened the other da} r in which a well-known coach proprietor played a prominent part. Two gentlemen were standing- in Devon-stvoet conversing-, when a lady canvassing for subscriptions in aid of the Benevolent Society solicited a subscription from each of the gentlemenShe was so eager in the cause that seeing a third gentleman who was likely to contribute she also “ bailed him up,” and while doing so, gave the coach proprietor, an opportunity of “ skcddadling,” which lie did, concealing himself inside a hearse. On turning round to resume her persuasions, the lady found that ; one of her intended victims had escaped, and after obtaining a subscription from the gentleman who had the moral courage to stand his ground, she persuaded the said gentleman to betray the hiding-place of the absconder. The astonishment of the coaclT.proprietor, was. intense when he found the: hearse jdoor opened aiid he . was discovered by the fair lady stretched at full; length on the floor of the hearse. There was no help.for it, -and he paid his subscription, although it was awfully provoking to be. laughed- at in such . an unmerciful manner.—Taranaki IHcrdld. >
