TO THE EDITOR.
[Correspondents arc invited to discuss matters of public interest with fairness and brevity; this journal being an impartial medium of discussion and advocacy for all affairs relating to the County of I’atea.] WAVERLEY TOWN RESERVES. Sir, —The inhabitants of the town of Wavcrlcy have very recently bad conveyed to them by Government valuable lands ostensibly for recreative, ornamental, and; educational purposes. The Town Board has been entrusted with the duties of dealing with, and administering, the many benefits that should accrue therefrom. I. will confine myself at present chiefly to the propounding of some of the many, questions that should be asked. In another issue, with your permission, ! will review and comment on the actions of the above-named body re these lands. First, how long has the Town Board been i« possession of this Public Domain?
Were these lands given for other purposes than those 1 have indicated ? Why have they given seven days’notice only of their intention to lease ? How many members of the Board desire to obtain a convenient section at their own price? If a portion of the Town Hall Reserve makes up the number of sections to fourteen, why is it not pointed out in the advertisement ?
Why do they withhold information as to conditions of lease till the auctioneer mounts the rostrum. Is it that the members of the Board and their immediate friends may have a superior advantage to othe'r bidders ? Can the several members composing the Town Board affirm that they are seeking the present and future interests of the inhabitants of this town re the disposal of lands ? • A.o X Uiu liot> to anowor il*ooo <juvo tions satisfactorily 1 hope some one else can. —Yours, &c. ; J. Caldwell. Wavcrlcy, July 17th.
