HAWERA.

[from our correspondent.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. Noatre Block.—l notice that the Waste Lands Board in New Plymouth rather took exception to my communication re letting the contract in the Ngairc Block for road-making, and the Commissioner refers to my remarks on the subject as inaccurate. I may say i niuiu upon uic representation one of the deferred payment settlers, whom I had arid still have confidence. The Commissioner, as reported, seems to confirm my remarks to a large extent, for he stated that upon representation being made to the Government that there were a great many unemployed in the district, tenders were not called for. I am quite willing to leave the verdict to the deferred payment settlers themselves, although I doubt if the Commissioner will be able to-find 28 settlers in the Ngairc Block who are working on the road. The Bad Weather oi last week has once more assisted to make the already muddy roads muddier. The Mountain track has been something fearful since Saturday. Travellers quite dread it, and make preparation for a “ camp out” when going that way. A feeling exists in Hawera that, although glad to see the Government spending money in the district, the railway works at Carlyle are too premature, and that the Government should have pushed on the works from both ends at a more rapid rate. There is one thing that should be urged upon the Ministiy, and that is the immediate letting of tenders for a tunnel at the Tangahoc. If the district neglects this, they will find, whenever tho contracts are let, that the time for this particular contract will extend over such a period that ere this line meets with the Wanganui end, the old settlers will be weary of waiting.
