Burial of a Chief.
(Telegram from our Correspondent.) Waitotara, Friday Evening. The funeral of Piremona, the chief who was gored to death by a cow on Mondaj-, took place j r osterday. After the chief had been butted by the infuriated cow, he was carried bleeding and almost insensible to Ihupuku. During the evening be complained of a pain in the chest, and said, “ Kau mate au.” Gradually he sank, and died about midnight. A large number of natives attended the tangi on Tuesday and Wednesday. During Titokowaru’s war, Pirimona saved the lives of several of the settlers here by warning them in time to escape from their dwellings to the Wcreroa redoubt. He was a staunch friends of the Europeans, and was trusted and respected by all the settlers, among whom his name will bo held in affectionate and grateful remembrance. The remains were interred at noon today, with Maori ceremonies, and the body was laid in the hill close to his village. A large number of natives and a considerable muster of the settlers attended. At the Patea Native Lands Court yesterday, another application was made by natives, in open court, to have the business suspended till after the funeral of the dead chief. Judge Heaphy again explained that this is contrary to custom, and could not be done.
