Batch of Unemployed.
RAILWAY ROAD-MAKING.
We are informed that a batch of unemployed will reach Patea this afternoon from Wellington, by the incoming steamer. There are about twenty-five able-bodied men in this first draft for Patea district, and a second draft is expected to follow in a short time. The men are to be set at work on a section of Railway near the Kakaramea Station, and another batch will operate at the Junction Station above the Patea section. Major Noake arrived in Patea yesterday, to arrange for camping the 25 men who are to arrive to-day, and also the second batch to follow. The men arc to be lodged in tents adjacent to the river, near the Junction Station, and tenders for supplying firewood are invited. Mr S. Tapliu has been instructed to supply road-making implements to the men, at contract prices. Ml W iw Uv ill flip £l>ol instance, by Mr McGuire, of Hawera, who is the contractor lor stores required by Government employees on the Plains. We suppose contracts will be invited, in the usual course, for supplying stores to the Patea detachment.
