WAVERLEY.
BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL,
Tue Late Rifle Match. —lt is questionable whether this _ should be called a match. The. Waverley contingent fired on Tuesday, which was certainly a very miserable day for it, while the Patca men waited for a bettor day, and did no firing on Tuesday. If the Waverley marksmen wore behind with their score, it is not surely understood that the Patea men have the best of it, seeing they waited for suitable weather. Valuation. —The general dissatisfaction with the valuation put upon the land required for railway purposes is taking definite shape, as men of experience in land valuation are being employed to pass an opinion. The estimate will no doubt place more of proportionate value on the lands than has been set by the Government valuator. Cadets. —The Cadet Corps which was formed here cannot be enrolled, their services being, like many others now paid for, of no value to the country, and the distressed state of the money chest, from paying for too many toys, points to a winding up of all non-sup-porting crotchets. The letter announcing this disappointing fact to the youngsters will no doubt be politely worded, but will not be received with mud, satisfaction by them.
