SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION.
The 4 mystery of , the frozen arouncKthe South Pole Las been less attractive to explorers and to scientific theorists than that of-the North. Now comes a change. Arrangments are being made, according to the Daily News’ correspondent at Naples, for an Italian Antarctic expedition, to leave Genoa not later than May next year, touching at Monte Video, Terra del Fnego, Falkland Islands, &c. It will remain two winters in the Antarctic regions, for the purpose of soieiilific discovery and exploration, making use of the period when Lite ice is firm for sleigh excursions ; and it will return to Naples after touching at spine Australian ports and visiting Cape Town. The expense, it is thought, will not exceed 600,000 lire, and the crew of the A’cssel will number about 40, being partly selected from the Italian nav3 r and partly from the Italian whalefishers.
