HAWERA.

[l-' lIOM O U 11 C pmtEBI'OXD 15 X T.] Tukke is a good deal of dissatisfaction at the action of the Taranaki Land Board in letting contracts privately for bush falling and clearing on the roads through the Ngaire Block. It is alleged that the Board engaged a lot of Inglewood deferred payment settlers who are in arrears with their payments upon those roads, and thus excluded those; working men who have lately taken up land in the block from participating in the benefits which, from their position being so near the work, should in justice accrue to them. This is smother instance of the evils we have to bear by being governed by the northern side of the mountain influence-. . There must have been something in the air on Saturday night, some influence which made people lose their perpendicular, and brought out their bump of combativeness very strongly. A fight is rather a scarce sight in Hawcra, bnt last Saturday was a jubilee, ami onlookers were treated with three fights at the same lime. Yet there was not a great deal of claret spilt, although no doubt some combatants had sore Lends next morning.

Mr Wilkinson, the clerk of the Court, hns had his hands full since he arrived hero. Everybody is sncing or being sued. It is a very bad sign of the times, but in a great many cases the creditors have themselves to blame for giving such long and large credit. Somb person or other is in the habit of taking papers away from the table of the Public Library. The committee are determined if they can to find out the offender, to punish him with the utmost severity ; but perhaps a hint to that effect will .be sufficient to deter him from tins meanness for the future.
