HAWERA.

The Adjourned Meeting of the Haw era Gun Club took place at Owen’s Hotel on Monday evening, when there was a fair attendance. The rules were amended according to the requirements of the club, and authorized to bo printed for distribution amongst the members. The following were elected office-bearers :—Mr G. McLean, president; Mr H. R. Harrington, vice-presi-dent; Mr R. Douglas, hon. secretary and treasurer; and a committee consisting of Messrs 0. H. McOutchan, F. Riddiford, F. V. Lysaght, H. Southey, and A. Owen. The Monthly Parade of the Hawera Light Horse took place on Monday, at the paddock behind Lloyd’s hotel. There was a fair muster, considering the threatening state of the -weather. Major Noakc on this occasion held a foot-drill, and put tho nien through-part of the sword exercise. I don’t know whether the swords were too heavy, or some of the men’s muscles too light, but the weapons at “point” seemed unsteady, probably from want of practice. A Finance Committee was appointed consisting of tbc officers and Messrs Mason, Hurley, Cbcal, Locker, and W. Wilson. Mr G. Y. Bate -was appointed secretary to the corps. I
hear there is a petition, in course of getting signed by the whole of the company, to,the House of Representatives, asking that the corps be put on the same footing as the Waikato Cavalry. Mr Bryce, as an old cavalryman, has expressed himself strongly in favor of the movement. There is no doubt that the Hawera Cavalry did good service last year during the Maori disturbance, and this service was very scantily recognized by the Government.
The Billiard Tournament at Lloyd’s concluded after a good game between Heaphy (10) and Carroll (back 5); the former, by a good break of about 30 when they were about 90, getting the lead and maintaining it throughout. There is a good deal of building going on at the present time., but principally in dwelling houses, for which there seems to be a brisk demand.
Major Brown left for Now Plymouth on Wednesday, bub will return next Monday to attend the Native Lauds Court at Patca.
