TO THE “ MAILT ALLEGED RAILWAY JOBBERY. Dunedin, Friday. The Dally Times says; “We arc informed, as regards Conyer’s connection with Davidson, that it amounts to leaving a certain sum of money in the business at a fixed rate of interest, without participation in profits. Mr Macandrew was aware of the nature of the arrangement. SUPPOSED MURDER OF A WIFE. Invercargill, Friday. The wife of a publican at North Invercargill has been found dead in bed. Several severe bruises on the body having excited a suspicion of violence, an inquest has been commenced, but adjourned for medical evidence. PUBLIC PROTEST. Christchurch, 24th. The largest meeting ever held in Canterbury took place in the public hall last night, in reference to the taxation and finance of the colony. The following resolutions were carried : —(1) This meeting views with alarm the disclosures contained in the report of the Civil Service Commission, and requests their representatives to further the system of retrenchment suggested by the Commissioners ; also, to reduce colonial expenditure by every possible means, and support the Government in any effort they may make in this direction. (2) That the thanks of the public are duo to the Civil Service Commissioners for their able and searching report just presented ; that this meeting hopes the Commission will continue their investigations throughout every department of the Civil Service ; and that views with pleasure the action Government in instituting a searching enquiry by the Commissioners, and trusts the Government will do their best to root out the extravagances known to exist.
