School Examixatiox.— 'The half-yearly examination of pupils attending the school was held on Thursday. There was a large attendance of children, about 140 present, and it was stated that there are 171 on the roll. The pupils acquitted themselves very creditably, and the members of the School Committee, who were present, expressed satisfaction at the progress made during the past half-year. The children then separated for their mid-winter holidays—a break in school work which puzzles the uninitiated as to the reason why ; but we must live and learn. Settlers’ Ball. —Those who predicted a success for the Settlers’ Ball must have been satisfied when they found the arrangements such as could not be surpassed on the Coast, the friends from Hawera and Wanganui forgetting the trouble of a long journey for the pleasure of meeting old friends, and perhaps adding fresh ones to the list. The hall was found none too large, there being about 300 present. The supper table was arranged with great taste by Mr Ballam, of the Commercial, and the supply of everything was on a very liberal scale. The dancing was kept up with spirit till about 5 a.m,, and the ball will be remembered as the bestattended and most successful we have had in Waverley. Main Road. —ln some places between Waverley and Waitotara the road is getting much cut up, which makes the traffic very heavy. It is no doubt a bad section of the road to keep in proper repair, but the Council should have seen to the work during the summer. It is not to be supposed that the blame is laid on the surfacemen, as the}' can only keep filling the nils in a bad piece of formation, find afresh job at the same place a few hours after.
