WAITOTARA.

[from our correspondent.]

I hear that we are likely to lose the services of Mr J. R. Hynes, who has been stationed here as constable for several years. This will be learned with regret by the whole community, with scarcely an exception. His quiet and unobtrusive attention to duty, his intimate knowledge of the Maori language, and his tacMn dealing with natives, have rendered him very popular with both settlers and natives ; a vciy important matter where quite two-thirds of the population belong to the Maori race. Owing to no less than five of the intended performers, including a pianist, having temporarily or permanently left the district, our projected winter entertainments have been indefinitely postponed.
