WAVERLEY.

[from our correspondent.]

Mutual Improvement Societv. —On Friday evening there was a fair attendance of those interested in the formation of this society. Owing to the inclemency of the weather several were kept away, while others who would have attended were prevented,, owing to oversight in not

sending them notice. Those present'expressed interest in the formation of such ■'a society, and other speakers pointed out. advantages, and expressed a hope Unit the promoters of this society would meet with that support and success which had followed similar well conducted societies. The business was of a preliminary nature, a committee being called to draw up rules and regulations for the guidance of the Society ; and Mr John Barr was appointed Secretary pro tern. The members meet again on Wednesday, 23rd, to discuss the proposed rules. Volunteers. —The usual monthly inspection took place on Saturday. There was a fair muster, and the drill was gone through in the old Town Hall. There is likely to bo a hitch with some of the members of the corps, as they shew a disinclination to take their uniform. It is to be hoped that no rupture may come out of tnese differences, as it is desirable to see our volunteers rather noted than otherwise for their neatness in dress and efficiency at drill.

Hedge-Trimming. —The price at which gorsn hedges arc trimmed gives some idea of the scarcity of work ; and there can be little excuse for hedges encroaching on the highways being left as they are, or any necessary outdoor work being left standing because of the cost.
