[from our corresponded t.] WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday. Present, Messrs Bridge, (chairman,) Aiken, Johnston, and McLean. The treasurer’s statement showed expenditure, £lB3 18s 9d ; and receipts from Block 8, £72 19s 2d ; from block 9, £232 19s. A letter from the Treasury stated that £IOO had been paid to the Board’s credit . on account of deferred payment land Block 9. Another letterfrorn the Treasury stated that money paid on deferred payments in January 1880 will be placed to the credit of the Board in a few days. A letter was read from the Hawera Road Board suggesting an amendment to the Financial Arrangement Act of 187G, A letter was also read from the County Council complaining of the Board obstructing the road at Waitotara. The Chairman had sent a reply asking in what way the culvertinterfered with the road and obstructed the traffic. Notice was sent to Messrs B.N. Hawse and W. Milne, as guarantors, to pay the amount of rates collected by Mr Winchcomb, and said to have been lost when his office was burnt in December last. Proposed by Mr Johnston, seconded by Mr Aiken, “ That a rate of 9d in the £ be made for the year ending March 31st 1881, payable on June 7th.” Carried. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Johnston, “That Messrs Johnston, Aiken, and McLean sign the Bate Book.” Carried. Mr lon then took the chair. The report of the Foreman of Works was read. Tenders were taken into consideration : —Momahaki bush falling No. 1, Woolston, 15s per chain ; Harrison and Dudley, 25s ; Craig and Brookes, 14s ; Cornwall, Glcnworth and Giles, 14s ; Thurston and Hughes 16s ; Dempsey, 16s 6d , Relling 20s. The tenders were all declined. Bush Falling No. 2, Woolston, 17s; Harrison and Dudley, 26s ; Craig and Brookes, 17s ; Cornwall and Glentworth and Giles, 15s ; Relling, 22s 6d, per chain. Proposed by Mr lon, seconded by Mr Johnston, “ That the Tender of Cornwall and Co., be accepted.” Carried. Side Gutting, Dudley and Harrison, £3 2s6dper chain; Thurston ami -Hughes £2 18s ; Craig and Brookes, £2 19s: J. Hughes, £3 17s 6cl; Fraser and Muldrock, £2 12s 6d. A tender was received from j. Jones at 2,30 p.m. but being after the time it was not taken into consideration. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr lon, “ That the Tender of Messrs Fraser and Muldrock be accepted.” Carried. J. Saunders applied ta the Board requesting ah extension of time for a fortnight on accound of the recent bad weather. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Aiken, “That the application be granted.” Carried. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Aiken, “ That the suggestion of the Hawera Road Board be agreed to, with this addition, “That the moneys be handed over to the Road Boards for expenditure.” Carried. Proposed by Mr M, McLean, seconded by Mr Johnston, ‘’That tenders bo invited by next meeting for a cutting on the Karahiki Hill, grade lin 10.” Carried. The following accounts were, passed for payment:— Hughes and Thurston £24 lOs, Taylor £3 15s, Patea Mail” £2 4s 3d, Ross Bs, Overend £1 0s 7d, Jones £5 18s 6d, Taylor £1 4s 6d, Kensella £7, Harrison and Dudley £2l 2s, Keating £l2 4s, Woolstou £2, Bowie £27 13s. The Board then went into committee.

Race Course. —The ploughing bee took place oh Friday, and the day was everything that could be desired for the purpose. Ten teems mustered during the morning, and the whole of the ploughing was finished by 4 p.m. Some found useful employment in filling up hollows with long-handled shovels. On Saturday the ground was harrowed, sown with grass, and rolled, the whole of the work being done in a most creditable manner. When so many; put in an appearance and lent a hand it is iuvidous to draw comparisons or make distinctions; but Mr Ballam, of the Commercial Hotel, deserves some medc of praise, as he, by way of assistance, supplied a substantial luncheon on the ground, with no stinted measure of liquor j so that the whole affair has been gone into and finished in a way that says something for the public spirit of Wavcrlcy settlers. Town Board.— A special meeting of the Town Board was held at Mr office, on Saturday, the following memhers being present, Mr Swinburne (Chairman), Messrs Read, Bowie, and McLean. The business was to appoint a rate-collector, two candidates having sent in applications. It was proposed by Mr Thomas Read, and seconded by Mr M. McLean, “ that the tender of Mr Mason be accepted ’’(carried). Proposed by Mr «L Bowie,, and seconded by Mr McLean, " That a rate of one shilling in the pound be made by the Board for the current year ” (carried). The Chairman submitted an application from Mr W. Milne for the use of the old Town Hall in which to address the electors oh Wednesday ’ evening. The request was at once granted, and the meeting was brought to a close.
