HAWERA.

[FROM OCR COURESFONKKifT.] Mr W. M. Thomson held a sale of damaged goods ex Patea steamer, of which Messrs Whittaker were the consignees. The prices realized were fair considering the damage done. That ranch-writen-abont block, the Whakamara, has at last got most of its roads made. When a contract now in hand for bush falling &c., is finished, there will be a very fair road as far as Mr Allan’s property. . The side cuttings have been heavy, notwithstanding the numerous deviations that had to be made from the road lines originally laid off.

Jb. public meeting: is to bo bold, at Normanby next Thursday evening, to discuss tho question of a combined municipality for Hapera and Normanby. In a question of this importance no doubt there will bo a great 'diversity of opinion, bnt unless the promoters can lay before the meeting some sound basis to work upon, so that the two opposing interests of the two places may not clash, I fear theywill not succeed in the undertaking.

The successful tenderer for the Railway contract on the Mountain road is not yet known. A local tenderer is pretty sanguine that he will be the lowest. I hope he may be, as it will keep the money in the district, should hc : be so fortunate as to make a good thing out of it. The Government have at last appointed a medical man to the A.C. force on the Plains. I believe he will reside in camp, and be continually in attendance in case of need.

A football match was played on Saturday afternoon on the cricket ground (but not on the pitch), between Mokoia and Hawera, which resulted in tie, each side scoring two points. It was only a practice match, so : the kickists might get a little wind for the coming contests with New Plymouth and Carlyle.

A Parade of the Hawera Light Horse took place on Saturday, when a fair number mustered. Captain Lukis put the men through the usual drill. Normanby is gazetted as a centre for a money order and savings bank business. Hawera and Inglewood are gazetted as districts under the Marriage Act.
