TO THE EDITOR.
[Correspondents arc invited to discuss matters of public interest with fairness and brevity : t.lis« journal Polng :m impartial medium of discussion and advocacy for all affairs relating to the County of Patea.] HARBOR BOARD CONSTITUTION. Sir, —I see in the Mail of the 18th ult. you say, “We are all interested in having the Harbor Board constituted in the best possible way,” and “ the Board is elective and as the memorial (as I have been told, not having seen it) was askingour member to endeavour to alter the Act so as to make the Board elective, but not in the way you put it, I don’t see anything irregular in the settlers, or any number of settlers, signing a memorial asking him to remedy any wrong that was being done, I will, with your permission, point out an error, viz., you say two are elected (nominated) by the County Council. It should have been one ; and when you say one for the Town Board of Carlyle, it should have been two, which makes a considerable difference even in the way you put it, in a Board consisting of seven members only. According to your views, there is no such thing as a nominated individual iu New Zcaiand, not even in the Legislative Council, as the Government is composed of members elected by the people. The said Government nominates, proposes, appoints, or “elects” members of the aforesaid Council. Again, the Waste Lands Boards of the colony are not nominated, as some persons ignorantly imagined, but elected, as the public elects the members of whom the Government consists, and they in their turn {vide Patea Mail, 18th May, 1880) elect the Waste Lands Boards. Hoping, sir, that you will excuse this public attempt of mine to explain that one section of the public did not see everything in the same light as yourself, believe me to remain One that would have Signed the Memorial.
