HAWERA.
I* PROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] During the last few days there have been great enquiries for land. Strangers are flocking in right and left. I hear Mr Thomas Middlemas has sold his farm at a satisfactory price, but the amount has not yet transpired, People are looking forward to a very prosperous spring, as no doubt by that time the Government will have seen the advisability of putting the Plains in the market. The manner in which the Ngairc land has been sought after should be a sufficient proof that there will be no lack of purchasers, and I have very little doubt but that it will go at extreme prices whenever it is offered.
A glaring instance of the manner in which the County Hospital is being diverted from the legitimate sphere came under my notice to-day. The Constabulary, who are stationed some eight or nine miles within the Taranaki County, sent one of the Public Works contingent, who had unfortunately met with an accident, to Hawera, to be forwarded to Patea Hospital. The man was thoroughly destitute, and as the coachman refused to take him without the faro, a subscription had to be made in Hawera to forward hint to that place. Now, while holding the officers of the A.C. quite blameless in the matter, as no doubt they wore actuated by humane motives, 3 think your readers will agree with me that it is sufficient drain upon this County to support its own invalids without having those of the Taranaki County thrust upon us in this manner. If the Government will not supply a doctor for the large force now stationed betwten Opunake and Stoney river, they should at least pay all expenses when any man meets with an accident or is laid up through the nature of their employment under the Government. I think the chairman of the County Council should enquire into this matter and have an understanding upon the subject, in case it is repeated. A Chess Clue was formed last week. Last night was the first night of practice. A Discussion took place at the last Town Board meeting as to the advisability of forming a municipality, and do away with the present Board. There arc some in favor of an amalgamation with Normanby, but I fail to sec how such a municipality could be worked, even though the interests were identical, which in the case under review they are decidedly not.
