WAVERLEY.

[p ROM OUR CORRES PON DE N T., — Town Board. —The Board met on Monday afternoon at four o’clock. Members present—Messrs Swinburne, Taylor, Read, McLean, and Bowie. Mr. Swinbonrnc was elected Chairman of the Domain Board. The collection of rates was brought under consideration, there being throe candidates for the appointment, Messrs Mason, Fookes, and Winchcombo. It was resolved, after considerable deliberation, that tenders be called tor the work. It was found that as no notice had been served upon those having hedges encroaching on the footpaths, no stops could be taken in the matter. Mr Fookes having offered the use of his office for the Board’s meetings at the moderate rental of £5 per annum, his offer was accepted. The Board then adjourned till Saturday, 12th June, at S p.m. Enouish Church. —The foundation block of the church hero was formally laid on Tuesday. The ceremony was performed by Mrs David Hunter, of Kenilworth, who went through the routine of using the square, &c. in the orthodox fashion, naming the Church St. Stephen’s. The services wore conducted by the Rev Mr Dasent, assisted, by Mr Horner, Whenuakura. There was a very fair attendance of the members and adherents of the church here, with a sprinkling of strangers from Patea. When finished, the church will he a groat convenience to the worshippers in connection with that body, as the school-room feels anything but convenient, and the arrangements not very satisfactory. With a Sabbath-school in one division and service held in the other, there seems something like jarring.

Race Course.— On Tuesday, Messrs Hair, Mitchell, and Howlands occupied themselves in laying off the course. The length of the course is 99 chains, with an average width of two-thirds of a chain, or fully 16 yards. When the ploughing is done, and everything put in proper order, the race course will look well, as the course has been carefully chosen.
