NORMANBY.
f*FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] A Public Meeting was hold on Wed] nesday night, at Normanby, for the forma tion of a company to build a Town Hall and Public Library. Mr C. E. Gibson was voted to the chair. The Chairman thought that Normanby had arrived at that stage when some endeavor should bo made to erect a Public Hall, which would acne alike for entertainments and meetings, as well as for a Library. The place was growing fast, and lie had no doubt that such a company would pay well in a little time, and also add very much to the importance of the place. Mr Wreford said that he had been requested to see Mr Bate to get information regarding the formation of the Hawera Town Hall Company. He had interviewed that gentleman, and Mr Bate had promised to attend. Mr Bate stated that when they started by calling a public meeting, the same as had been done that night, a resolution was passed that a company should be formed ; also provisional directors, bankers, and solicitor were appointed. The preliminary expense was somewhat heavy for incorporating the company. He also explained the number of shares that were taken up, the cost of the building, &c. In answer to a question, he stated that he did not think a company for a Town Hall and Public Library could be worked together, ami that there was another difficult}', for the company would have to be registered under the Limited Liabilities Act, whilst the Public Library, in order to participate in Government subsidies, would have to be registered under the Public Libraries Act. After some discussion with reference to the site offered by Mr Hurst, of Wellington, and other matters, it was proposed by Mr Gibson, and seconded by Mr Lockington, “ That a company be formed, to be
called the Normanby Town Hall Company, with a capital of £OOO, in £1 shares, for the purpose of erecting a building for public meetings, entertainments, readingroom, library, &c.”—Carried. Proposed by Mr Dacre, seconded by Mr Gibson, “ That the following gentlemen be the provisional directors—Messrs J. Robson, T. Robson, W. Lockington, C, E. Gibson, F. H. Brett, Beresforc/, F. Hunger, IX McGregor, Morrison, amll R. Dacre.”--Carried. Proposed by Mr BretC-sCconded by Mr Hunger, “ That the bankers of the company be the Bank of New Zealand at Normanby ; and that Mr C. It. Wreford be appointed secretary pro tern.”—Carried. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Bate for his attendance and explanation. At a meeting of directors, held immediately after, Mr C. E. Gibson was elected chairman, and Messrs Hunger, Lockington, and Dacre, with the chairman, were appointed a committee to draw up the prospectus of the company.
