Coaching . gets slower every clay along the heavy roads. The up-coach from Kai Iwi did not reach Carlyle yesterday till nearly one o’clock midday. A long stoppage was caused by a culvert being opened, with no alternative passage round it, except by a i long detour. The steamer Patea left Nelson yesterday for Wellington, after lying up for slight repair, two rivets having given way during the late rough weather. The Patea will return to Carlyle about Friday, and will sail again for Wellington on Saturday. Chuuton’s College, at Wanganui, will be opened about three weeks hence; and Mr Menzies, late of Otaki, will be the principal teacher, his wife taking charge of the boarders.' ■ The endowment is at present worth £IOOO a year —a magnificent gift which should cause Mr Churton’s memory to be held in honor. Infected Sheep are again causing trouble and apprehension in this district. Scab has broken out on the Whenuakura block, upon the Paranui run belonging to Mr Alfred Palmer; and the run is advertised by the inspector as an infected place. We believe three cases of prosecution will come before the R.M. Court to-morrow, for alleged neglect of precautions!.‘ ■

Mr Pringle, of the firm of Eyton and Pringle, Carlyle, is appointed an accountant in bankruptcy.

Horse Sale.— Mr Cowcrn’s sale of horses at Carlyle, on Saturday, attracted unusual attention, and it is seldom such a gathering is seen at an outdoor auction in this district. When spring approaches, a weekly sale of horses might be held in Carlyle, with advantage to the district. This class* of stock has not been’ in much demand' lately, although sellers have been plentiful. There were 13 saddle hacks offered on Saturday, the prices ranging from £2 12s Gd to £ls, with sluggish bidding. Five harness horses sold at prices ranging from £ll 10s to £l7. Five draught horses were offered, two bcing sold at £4O and £42 10s. Mr Coworn also sold a four-wheel covered van at £27, and a timber waggon at £l7.

The Electoral Roll, as corrected up to the-22nd instant, is open for inspection at the Carlyle Court House. Electors should nop overlook the fact that leasehold claims have ceased to be a proper qualification, under the new Act. Registration is good only for freehold property, or for residence over six months within the Egmont district.

Parliament assembles to-morrow, and the proceedings will open , with p. Speech from the Governor, setting forth the measures which Ministers-purpose introducing. Mr Henry Sergeant, an old settles has returned from England to Wanganui. :

A Whirlwind is reported to have passed over Omata, near New Plymouth. Trees and buildings wove levelled, aud the debris carried long distances. Gaps were cut clean . through one or two fences. Houses that stood a little off the main track of the whirlwind wore in great danger, and rocked fearfully.

A Purlic Meeting is convened by the Chairman of the County Council, to he held in the Carlyle Town Hall next Tuesday, for the consideration of four subjects of urgent public interest to this County. The meeting is convened in compliance with a requisition' presented to Mr Dale yesterday, and bearing 38 signatures of principal ratepayers and electors residing in and near Carlyle. _ The signatures show remarkable unanimity of° opinion as to the necessity of public action being taken without farther delay for bringing the neglected interests of this county under the notice of Parliament, by means of petitions.
