Star v. Carlyle Cum.— l The adage of “ Queen’s weather ” did not hold good on Monday afternoon, and consequently our local footballists were 'somewhat disappointed ; but soon after the appointed time all the players and a number of spectators mustered on the Recreation Ground, The players seemed determined to have a struggle, and so the game was started in spite of the rain. .Mr Jacomb captained the Star Club, and when they stripped they certainly looked a stalwart lot. They comprised Messrs Sergeant, A. McKillock, W. Locker, 11. Locker, J. Dwyer, W. Sangster, R. Sangster, W. Higginson, Ma}% H. McCarty, Jos. McCarty, and three others. Mr Coutts, captain of the Carlyle Club, placed the following men in the field :—Messrs J. Chadwick, F. Powell, T. Turner, H. S. Sinclaire, H. Chadwick,' F. Baddeley, W. Dasent, E. Jones, M. llymes, J. McCarty, H. Hughes, and J. Hatching. Messrs - Henan and B. Dasent officiated as umpires, and Messrs J. Black and A. King as time-keepers. Many of the countenances of the players wore a don’t-half-like-it expression when the leather-hunting commenced at 3-15 in a steady downfall of rain, but soon a change for the better came, and there was little to complain of while the game lasted. The Star had what little advantage there was from the wind during the first half-hour, but this did not prevent their opponents obtaining a goal and a touch-down before “ time ” was called. The ball was very often in dangerous proximity to the goal of the Carlyle Club, but Coutts, who played back, generally caused the forwards of the' Star team .to retire well up the field. After the first half it was seen that a decided victoiy would follow for the Carlyle Club, but their opponents played with great pluck and determination from start to finish. There were numerous scrimmages and general mauls, throughout which the Stars appeared to relish, and indeed when these and other rough features in the game presented themselves, they seemed to be all at homo. There were no accidents other than a few barked shins and torn guernseys; and although at times arguments and disputes ran high with some of the players, no ill-feeling characterised the game at any time. Messrs Coutts, Powell, and Kitching each scored goals for their side, and Dasent failed in a “ try,” but as all seemed to work well, individualising further is uncalled for. The winning team did not appear unduly elated at their success, nor did the defeated accept their beating with bad grace. Three cheers were given by the Carlyle Club for the Star Club, who lustily returned the compliment; when all joined in a hearty cheer in acknowledgment of the services rendered by the umpires and time-keepers. Attention was then turned in the direction of home. Five goals and three touch-downs were obtained by the Carlyle Club, in all 36 points, to their opponents’ nil. Carlyle v. Waverley. —The following players were selected to oppose the ’Waverley. team on , Saturday next:— Messrs Coutts, T. Williams, F. Powell, T. Turner, Baggett, Dasent, J. Kitching, J. Chadwick, H. Chadwick, W. Williams, Adamson, Byrnes, Baddeley, Henan, Hughes, F. Read,'H. S. Sinclaire, and G. Jones.

County Match;— There are ?now sotriic thirty-' members; belonging to the Carlyle; Fodtball|Club, and as a number of neV members, will be;propbsed, Carlyle should;, make its'powerafelt this season. There.’is some talk - of trying., to manage a match with the Wanganui players this and we have no doubt a very good county team could be choson. The idea should bo put in the form of a challenge.
