Land Salks, by Government order, arc to take place in this county, north of Hawera, within a few weeks, as advertised to-day. The 'contracts for Carlyle branch railway are to be proceeded with immediately. The two petty contracts already let, as announced on Tuesday, were afterwards delayed by official order; but wo understand this delay was only a routine matter, of no importance, and that the work is to bo gone on.with at once. These earth-works will bring men and money to the district, and the farther contracts between the river bend and the station site are likely to be pnt in band early, though not yet advertised.

The Railway to Waitotaua is an accomplished fact. Our correspondent telegraphs that Mr Ballance was ono of a small party conveyed yesterday over the line from Kai Iwi to Waitotara by an engine and one truck, as an experimental run. This was the first engine run through.

The Homeward Mail via ’Frisco will close hero on the 20th. Another Steamer is to trade between Patea and Wanganui. It is'lo be put on by the Messrs Gibson, of Wanganui, and is a small paddle boat. The Patea, s.s., is expected to arrive this morning from Wellington. Ministerial.— The Hon Mr Bryce made a short stoppage in Carlyle yesterday, having been up-country inspecting the road-making, and the prospects of trouble or of an early completion of the through road. Work is proceeding without interruption,.as onr correspondents report. Mr W. Dale, chairman of the County Council, had a brief interview with Mr Bryce, and explained to him the urgency of supplying funds for keeping the , road-men at work on the Mountain road. The County Council have exhausted the funds supplied for this purpose, and only a few days can run before suspending the men, unless farther funds arrive for the purpose, this being a Government work. Mr Dale is also writing officially to Wellington on the subject. Mr Bryce promised early attention after reaching Wellington, which he will do about Wednesday,
