ATTEMPTED MURDERS. SHOOTING AT A MAN AND WIFE. "Wellington, Friday.' An attempted murder took place last night at Whangarci. Edwin Washer came into the township and reported that Janies Smith had attempted to murder him and his wife by tiring two shots at them from a six-barrel revolver On a constable visiting the scene of the outrage, he found a revolver on the floor, two chambers being empty, and four loaded. Ono of the balls lodged in the leather of Mr Washer’s brace at the back. After the shots were fired, the men closed, and a sheath knife dropped from the wonld-be assassin’s coat ; and in the meantime Mrs "Washer had succeeded in escaping to the neighboring house, whore she gave the alarm. No reason can as yet be assigned for the outrage. Before the constable arrived, Smith sncccded in making his escape, Friday, later. Smith lias been arrested. Further information shews that Smith made an improper proposal to Mrs Washer, winch she rejected, and the cause of the out" rage was an illicit love for the woman.
BING THEFT AT HAWERA. New Plymouth, Friday. At- : the Supreme Court -to-day,: William Cole,' charged with stealing two gold rings from Wilson, of Kctemarae Hotel, was sentenced to 18 months, hard labor. Crimes in Taranaki. New Plymouth, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day, the grand jury fei.ur.icd “ no bill” in Ihe case of attempted snioido at Hawcra. John Dale was tried for alleged criminal assault on his daughter, aged 12. She now denied all the evidence she had given at tl>o pi-eliminary inquiry. The case ended with a verdict of “ not guilty.” MAJOR ATKINSON. [Special to Mail.J New Plymouth, Friday. The Hinemoa, s.s. , is expected hero to-morrow to fetch Major Atkinson and Judge Richmond, who go to Wellington. GREAT WILL CASE. [Special to Mail,] Wellington, Friday. The Rhodes will case, involving some £200,000 worth of property, was commenced in the Supreme Court to-day. MAORI PRISONERS GRUMBLING. Dunedin, 6th. Maori prisoners much dissatisfied with the clothing supplied them. The R. M. investigated complaints to-day, when Tamnahiki demanded that all be dressed -alike, without reference to the clothing they already had. Te Rangi Paopoa and Wiremn Kingi also spoke. The Magistrate promised to see to their wants. JUMPING DOWN A WELL. Auckland, Friday. Mrs Ward, a. resident, ..attempted suicide by jumping down a well. She was rescued and found to be deranged. CRIMINAL OUTRAGE. Auckland, 6th, Alice McCarthy, a girl, was accosted by a man, dragged into a vacant 1 allotment, and criminally assaulted. The, culprit is not yet arrested. FEMALE SMUGGLER; Auckland, Friday.. Sarah Bostock, charged with smug r gling, was to-day fined £IOO and costs, for smuggling watches and jewellery. DEATH AT A PRAYER-' MEETING. Auckland, Gth.
