WA ITOTARA.
[FROM OUII COItIIKSP OXD K X T.] MC The Railway.— Workmen at the ▼ Railway bridge are knocked off, owing . to some of the timber being condemned, and it will. take a; week or two - before they can make another start The ballasting ought to push along rapidly how, as the Government have allowed another engine to the contractor. Sportsmen out to-day in plenty, and ; , with tolerable success. It is rather a; query here as to boundaries for the. Acclimatisation Societies. :The Wanganui society are issuing licenses to sportsmen allowing them to.shoot to the old provincial boundary line. of Taranaki and . Wellington,; and, the Hawora Society claim the boundary of Patea County, which means to Waitotara river One must be encroaching on ■ the other’s ground for some 8 or 10 miles. Tue County Council would do well to send their engineer to examine the new drain recently put down in this township. The drain is likely soon to wash all the earth from the river bank, leaving the bridge piles exposed, and so endangering the biidge. The planking of the bridge over the Waitotara is in a rotten and dangerous condition, and there is no knowing how soon some seiious accident may lay the Council under obligation for damages. By the way, which County is responsible for maintaining this boundary bridge? Some persons here are under the belief that the Wanganui County Council has charge of the farther side, and so is accountable for • one half of the bridge. If a valuable horse puts its foot through the middle, there will be an interesting dispute as to which of the two Councils should be sued for the value of the animal, and perhaps also the rider’s broken neck. [Woh?. — The bridge is the joint property of the two Counties, and its repair would have ‘ to be a mutual work; From its condition above described, the biidge cannot be neglected withouts erious and unjustifiable risk.—:Eu. Mail.] Our School Committee are desirous of a visit from Messrs Coutts and McGregor, who might easily look in as they pass the school-house, which they,; do frequently. They could then examine into the deficiencies which the committee are laboring under, and concerning which they have no hope of early remedy from the Education Board unless two or three members make it their business to see for themselves and report directly to the Board. Money was voted for a teacher’s residence, and has been dehited to ivnt allowance for the past year, but wo have not seen the money yet and have not got the residence. Ought there not to be some allowance for iilb-ivst on the money voted until we get the residence ?
