VOLUNTEER AMALGAMATION.
think “ Volunteer” would have done much better bad be stated facts in Saturday’s paper, instead of running down tho officers of the No. 2 company of Patea Rifles. Tho company are, I believe, perfectly satisfied with their officers. Were they not, I should think they would call upon those officers to resign. I "am sure no right-thinking man in the company would blame them for not resigning to make room for the officers of a company they could not keep together. “ Volunteer’s” letter would lead anyone to infer that the captain of No. 1 resigned to facilitate the amalgamation. This is not tho case, for he resigned some two or three weeks before an amalgamation was suggested, because they could not get a fair muster. “ Volunteer” wishes to show that the two companies turn out alike in about equal strength. As an instance of bis fairness, take the inspection by Colonel Leckie, 36 in No. 2 and 17 in No. 1. As to the companies having always tinned out in the same proportion since they started, llio following statement will show the onesided view “ Volunteer” takes : No. 2 Company ; total efficients : 61 full rate, @ £2 £122 0s Od 10 half-rate, @ £1 £lO 0s Od Total £lB2 0s Od Strength of corps, 78. No. 1 Company, total efficients : 36 full rate, @ £2 £72 0s Od 14 half rate, @ £1 £l4 0s Od Total ... ' £B6 0s 0d Strength of corps, 60. The above is the return just send in for capitation, and speaks for itself. In conclusion, I cannot help expressing regret that “Volunteer” should have been so devoid of common-sense as to rush into print upon a subject that could have been settled amongst the two corps.—l am,&e., ANOTHER VOLUNTEER.
