A RANGITIKEI IDYLL

Some verses which can hardly be called poetry have been addressed to a Wellington paper. There wore five stanzas, only three of which we consider fit for publication, and they are these : I 'am the doughty William Fox, To whom Stout Ballance gave such knocks Times since at Wanganui ; He then performed the churlish feat, To let me stand without a seat, A n act which made me ‘ pouri.’ Pity the sorrows of a Knight tha f, s old, Who hates being left out in the cold. I’ve lately tried my best to please The public, and some Maori getne Their feathers had to pluck ; And though L called them with a Bell To hear the tale I had to tell, I had but wretched luck. Pity the sorrows of a Fox that’s old, Wlio fears being left out in the cold. I will not state all 1 may do, Should I be now returned by you To sit in Parliament; But this with confidence I’ll say, ITI help to soundly bully Grey, Pay Ballance what he lent. Pity the sorrows of a Knight that’s old, Who hates being left out in the cold.

At Dunedin, £l5O have been collected for some plate presented to Mr Hnllcnstein, of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, on his leaving tor Europe. A vessel conveying French exhibits to Melbourne will leave in May. Mr Stevens the mate who was injured some time ago on board the Wakatipu, is now improving.
