HAWERA.
Accident at Normandy. —An accident occurred at Normanby on Sunday last, which nearly resulted in loss of life. A man named Chapman and two or three others were looking for pigs iu the bush. Chapman had a revolver strapped round Ids waist, and while going through the bush the revolver accidentally went otf, the bullet striking into his groin. A doctor was promptly sought, but could not he j found ; the wound bleeding profusely. His injury was attended to after a painful delay. He has a wife and small family at Inglewood. Cricket. —A match was played at Opunake on Saturday, between the Hawera and Opunake teams. The match was rather a hollow affair, the Haworas winning by over GO rims in the first innings, time not allowing the second to be played out. The Hon Mr Olliver, Minister for Public Works, accompanied by Mr Blackett, Engineer of Railways, arrived in Hawera on Monday, and visited the proposed situ for the railway station. A deputation headed by Mr Barleyman waited upon them, and urged the necessity of completing the line between Hawera and Stratford, as the road during the winter months will be practically useless for traffic, Mr Barleyman complained of the irregularity of the trains between Stratford and New Plymouth, suggesting that instead of the trains being made to suit tire convenience of the railway department, they ought to suit the convenience of passengers between Wanganui and New Plymouth. Mr Barleyman said that he never had heard until that day that there was any objection to the site of the railway station as laid off by Mr Foy, and he thought the public were perfectly satisfied with tire site. Mr T. Middlemas dissented from this view. Mr Olliver, in reply, said the Government were anxious to push on the line as expeditiously ns possible, and if any of the A’ote lapsed this year, it would be placed on the estimates for the next year, and he had no doubt would bo passed. Mr Blackett added that next week another portion of the line would be tendered for, which would meet at the Maugawiiero contract with Norman by. The deputation then withdrew. Town Board. —The Hawera Town Board held their usual monthly meeting on Monday ; present, Messrs Winks (chairman), King, Duffill, Cockburn, and Stevenson. The only business of importance was the striking of the rate for the ensuing year. Mr Cockburn proposed a rate of 9d. Mr King moved an amendment that the rate be Is in the pound. The amendment was lost on division. Some accounts were passed. HAWERA ROAD BOARD. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday. Present, Messrs Hunter, Chairman, Moreeroft, Gane, Ulster, and Morrison. : Resolved, that Mr. Cowern’s application for refunding of money spent by him on Allan road cannot be entertained. J. West’s tender was accepted for work to be done on Pain’s road. J, West’s tender was also accepted for work on No. 2 contract. Mell’s road. Mr Twigg was authorised to lay off deviation on West road. J. McKenzie’s application for position of Engineer to the Board, was held over. Resolved, that J. West be allowed £lO for extra work to be done on Pain road. Resolved, that Mr Allan be allowed £35. for extra work on West road. The Board having been informed that the chief surveyor would be requested to survey the deviations on the new Whakainava block, it was resolved that the Minister of Public Works be requested to provide funds for the surveys of the other deaffations, and the expense of exchanging the Board undertaking to provide the compensation for land required for the new roads ; and that the chairman be requested to lay the matter before the Minister for Public Works. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
