WAITOTARA.
(KUO!! A dOUUESPOXDRNT.) February 17. While raising the monkey frame of the pile driver at the railway bridge last week, Mr Bichrns, snl>-coiUractor, met with a serious accident. He was steadying the frame with a three inch batten, when the rope (a new one of incb-aiui-half diameter) parted, and the frame fell back, breaking the batten and driving the splintered end through the fl*shy part of his thigh, completely pinning him to the ground. Some of the other carpenters succeeded in withdrawing the splinter, which fortunately was a clean one. Dr Donaldson was telegraphed fur, and came out same evening. irfiuce then the injured man has been progressing satisfactorily, but will be unable to resume work for some lime, which
rather unfortunate for him, as the, contract time for completing the bridge dated from the day that the pile driver was raised. A number of the piles have been driven, and ilia work is fairly under way.
A number of carpenters arc out hero ready to begin the railway station, goons sh d, &c.. but are waiting for timber, which there is diuicuity in getting one, owing to scarcity of trucks on the Wanganui - Fox to n railway. While some bush was being burned on Sunday last, the oat stacks of Messrs U. and J. Durie ran a very narrow escape of being burned. Tile lire at one time was within a few feet of them, but several neighbors were watching, and succeeded in saving all except a stack of straw. Harvesting op; rations arc nearly completed, and threshing has been proceeding Imsiiv tor some lime.
