We were shown a monster poplar leaf yesterday by Mr Dcrrott. It measured 8 inches across the centre, and was 9 inches in length.
A Maori belonging to Mr Climie’s survey parly was drowned in the Patoa River (about 40 miles up) on Saturday last. It appears that a European and t lie Maori started from the camping ground to bring up a canoe that was lying on the bank sumo mile and a half down the river, and that they had to swim in places, where it was impossible to walk. Not long after leaving the camp, the Maori (who had his boots on) followed his companion into the liver, when he immediately sank, and was seen no more. The European at once returned to camp and gave the information and the party (chiefly Maoris) came on to Carlyle. They left again yesterday with the intention of trying to secure the body For some time past the Masons of Ilawera have been working quietly to get a lodge started in their midst, and we are glad to learn that they have succeeded in their endeavours, as the new lodge will be consecrated on Monday nest, the I6th instant. The opening ceremony will be conducted by P.M. Bro. Edward Aucher, D.G.S.W., Westland, assisted by P.M’s Bros. Dale and Coworn. We trust a large number of brethren will be present to witness this most impressive service. The ceremony will conclude with a banquet. The regalid of the new Lodge is now on view at the shop of Mr 11, 0. Pitcher, Ilawera, and are certainly very creditable to the manufacturer. (Bro. J. King, of Wellington), the master’s jewels being especially very handsome. Report of Patea West Road Board meeting and several letters unavoidably held over. The s.s. Patoa arrived from Wollingto ls on Sunday last, bringing seven draught horses for this district, besides a large general cargo. She left again for Wellington jesterday, when we believe several passengers were left behind.
