CARLYLE TOWN BOARD.
Thu regular monthly meeting of the above Board w.is held on Monday last. Present—Messrs Milroy (chairman), Aitehison, Taplin, Howitt, and Dale. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence included—
Letter from C. A. Wray, as follows : At the request of certain ratepayers who have purchased sub-divisions of my property near the Taranaki Road (section 46), I now submit to the Board a proposal to convey to that body the freehold contained in a street, which, commencing at the corner near to the Bank of New South Wales, proceeds in a south-westerly direction as far as allotment No. 27 ; and thence turns at right angles until it joins Lincoln-sfcreet. The street in question is now np -u Mnd fenced on both sides a •; tar ;t - r.';oi ment No. 22 ; and I would wait, h.-f-.e .oaveying the whole to the
Board, to receive a guarantee that the part of the street now enclosed in my paddock, and parallel to Lincoln-street, shall not he opened by the Board until it is convenient to me, or until some ot the sections abutting thereon have been sold, and due notice given.
From H. F. Christie, as follows ;—I beg to make the following proposal to your Board, which I 'nope will meet with their favorable consideration —If the Hoard will grant me an extension ol my present lease of Block -Iff, tor a further term of. say seven years, at the same rental as at present, and will allow me to enclose the street on the Lake side of the Block, and give me the use ol it for the same term as my sections arc now held, I will undertake to plant a double row of trees along both sides of the street, and will erect gates or turnstiles at both ends ol the street, so that the public may have free access thereto.
From McCarty & Hunger, stating that the police had threatened them with legal proceedings for allowing horses to eioss the footpath in front of their workshop, and asking the Board’s permission to be allowed to continue their former practice until a permanent crossing has been decided upon by the Board ; they guaranteeing that no obstruction to the footpath shall arise, and agreeing to make good all damage done. From F. W. Storey, James Smith, 11. C. Teiment, Hubert Erskiuo, De Gennes Fraser, and W. Cowern, re Captain Wray’s application, and requesting tiie Board to lake over the road, and also requesting that a gravelled footpath be made before winter.
Tin* Works Committee reported as follows:—The contract let to Mr Key’s for street liking lias been completed ami taken over; the culvert in Bcdford-street, opposite Bank Now Zealand, lias been lengthened 30 feet, to carry water from footpath. Jsix days labor of one man was employed in putting in culvert, and clearing water-tabic in Oxford-street and improving grade of footpath. A portion of the clay taken from cutting in Bcd-ford-street, and not required for filling in of contract, was ordered to be put down on east side of Taranaki lie ul and Town Board office section.
The inspector of Nuisances reported that 13 hoiscs and 3 bead of cattle had been impounded by the police during the month. Mr Odgers bad prevented slops being emptied in front of his premises, by ids servants, after being spoken to on the matter, Would recommend that a tixutr; be put in at the rubbish depot, so that drays could back snlfic cully near to deposit rubbish, without leaving portions scattered about. Proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Adams, and carried, “ That this Boaid accept the oiler of Captain Wray, viz., to cun rev to the Board that piece of land which divides bis property at the continuation of Siafi'ord-screeL; that the whole dopih of the road from Taranaki lioad to Linooln-stivet, be conveyed in one deed; ami that Captain vV ray be allowed to occupy the unrcqnired portion of such road on same tonus as other persons.” Messrs McCarty & Hunger’s applications to cross iootpaih was granted. JLToposed by Air Aiilroy, seconded by Mr Dale, and carried, " That the Board cannot grant Mr Christie’s application.'’ —An amendment by Mr Adams,seconded by Mr Taplin, ‘* 'That Mr Christie’s implication to enclose road, conditionally on fiis planting same with trees, bo complied with,” was lost. The following tenders were received ; Filling in roadway in Taranaki Hoad, J. Keys, £2 15s per chain; forming footpath in Lincoln and Slafford-strceta, ,J. Keys, A 1 5s per chain ; gravelling footpath in Bcdford-street, J. Keys, £,2 17s per chain ; Lincoln-strect, J. Keys, £2 7s per chain ; also gravelling roadway in Loicester-street, £7 10s per chain. All the above tenders wore accepted. Proposed by Mr Hale, seconded by Air Taplin, and carried, “ That this Board is of opinmu that if the station ol the Carlyle branch railway is fixed on the south side of the river, it will be detrimental to the best interests of the town, and that the Chairman write on behalf of lire Board to the Minister of Public Works, protesting against the station being built on the south side of the river.”
