TOWN BOARD V BROKEN PROMISES.

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir,—l do not wish to he personal or abusive to any one in particular in the Town Board, but it being the talk of the whole community that all the improvements and repairs are done in n certain locality, 1, with others, cannot overlook the barefaced and selfish way in which the present members of the Town Board are feathering their nests ; anti when 1 s.iy that. 1 mean a great deal, for we all know that il yon have good roads and footpaths around your properties, it increases the value of the same. Now, any honest thinking persons will agree with me that all the late improvements that have been done (if anything! arc a little out ol the d own, for 1 maintain the extension of Carlyle is from the Council Chambers to about R. A. Adams’ or thereaoout.-;; (Low is that, umpire). 1 would also call your attention to that lake of slinking, pntrified water that wo have had to put up with in front of our very doors fur this last three years, which always makes its appearance after every shower—from Colson s corner down to the Bank ol N. S.W., the place where the present contract ends. Just imagine fur a moment Mr North fetching his little bedridden daughter out on the pathway for a mouthful of fresh air, and to be almost suffocated with those horrible san-lls from the said lake. As regards promises that have been made in reference to it, I may slate publicly that you cannot place any confidence in what they say or promise. For instance, some six mouths ago (more or less) I sent in a request, signed by the principle ratepayers in Meredith-street, to have certain works done ; in answer to which the Board instructed their clerk to write to me, stating that as soon as they were up iu funds they would do the required work, (i. cannot find the letter, but 1 think that was the promise). The fine weather is passing away, and still not a blow is struck in that direction. I think the lime is not far off when we shall be compelled to ask the present members of the Town Board to go to Hong Kong, or some other place, as they have had time enough to improve their own properties, and some one else wants a chance lo do a little in that way. I was thinking if we could raise a small sum and purchase a section of land down in Mere-dith-stroct, and give it to the Chairman of the Town Board, wo should benefit by the action, as we could make sure of a road being opened then.—l am, i&e., JAMES LETT. Carlyle, 29tb January, 18S0. •rf
