COUNTY LAND REVENUE.

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sih, —I notice in jmur issue of the 24th instant, that Mr Dale has a letter re Land Revenue of Patea County, ami in reply to which. I forward for insertion a copy of letter to the Honorable Major Atkinson: — To the Honorable Major Atkinson, M.H.R., Wellington. Sir, —The returns of land sales for the quarter ending respectively March and June having come to hand, I have the honor to request that you will be so good as to inform me why there have been such heavy charges against the County on account of these sales. The sum realised from sales within the Wellington Provincial District amounts to about £10,608, and of which we areintitied to2o percent., or £2,121, hut have only received £432 16s 9d. The sales in the County, within the Taranaki Provincial District, amount to £2,929 7s 3d, and sundries £2 ICs, making a total of £2,931-17s 3d, less 25 per cent, to the New Plymouth Harbor Board, leaving a balance payable to the County of 20 per cent, on £2,199 10s 6d,

or £439 18s. Of this, only £59 13s Gii h.»s boon passed to our credit, making a total deduction from our portion of the 20 per cent, due to thq County of £2,069. I think tiiere must bo some en or, otherwise it appears to me monstrous that a Comity like ours should be saddled with such heavy charges.—l have, &c., F. McGiukk, Chairman Patoa County Council; I may state that from representations contained in the above letter, .Major Atkinson attended to the matter and tile County received what was due to it from the land sold in the Provincial, District of Taranaki between those dates. But the fact still' remains, that our County is a heavy looser hy having to forfeit the 25 per cent, for the New Plymouth Harbor, and also by the large endowments to the Wellington District for educational and other purposes ; and it is only by constantly representing these matters (as Mr Dale must well know) to the proper authorities, that we cm hope to obtain what we are fairly entitled to. —I am, &c., F. McGUIRE. riawem, 26th January, 1880.
