HAWERA PUBLIC MEETING.

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, — Having attended the public meeting held hero on the 17th instant, I might say that I felt rather surprised—in fact, grieved—at the report sent yon by your Hawora correspondent. 1 have attended a great many meetings hero at different times, and do not recollect one having been conducted in a more orderly manner than that of the 17th; yet, by reading your correspondent’s report, one would be led to believe it was a regular “ bear garden.” All the resolutions proposed were carried unanimously, showing that those present were not divided in opinion. 1 should strongly advise your correspondent to be more correct in his statements, for he hold up to ridicule those who did not in the least deserve it, and made an exceedingly good meeting appear a very bad one.—l am, &c., • TOWNSMAN. Ilawera, January 22, 1880.

(To (he Editor of the Patea Mail.) Bti!, —Your Waihi correspondent is a gentleman whose facetious remarks show that he allows a vivid imagination ami exuberant vanity to put his memory of facts entirely in the shade. He says in your last issue that “ The A.C. at this station ‘fancy ’ themselves, and il there are any local associations down your way think they can ‘wipe ns out/ just let them try !” It lias perhaps escaped his recollection that the same force who so “fancy” themselves had, a little while ago, ft match arranged wilh the Patea Rifles. That on the day appointed for the firing (each team to use its own range), the Pateas fired, and telegraphed the result of the scoring to Waihi, which, the A. C.’s beholding, took another “ fancy”—viz., that they would not compote, and the match has never been fired yet, although months have .since elapsed. We never shirked ft competition yotj although we have our work to attend to, and are not, like the A.C.’s., constantly handling the rifle (whenever they handle anything),—l am, &c., PATEA.
