George, New Plymouth, up to noon on Monday next, for the erection of a building for a Hour mill at Hawera. On Monday next, the householders of each of tlie School Districts within the Pa tea County are called upon to meet, “ for the purpose of receiving the annual reports of the School Committees for the past year, and to elect new committees for the current year.” Immediately after the elections, tire newly-elected Committees must hold their first meetings to elect chairmen, the names of such chairmen to be at once forwarded to the Board’s Secretary at Wanganui. A chemist, who does not live a hundred miles from Carlyle, says times are improving—there are mure cases of sickness than formerly. Messrs Ward & Co.’s sale of bankrupt stock commences to-day. For particulars see advertisement. The Native Minister (Mr Bryce), accompanied by .Major Nuake, arrived in Carlyle, from Wanganui, by private conveyance yesterday afternoon, and after a very brief stay proceeded to Hawera. A change is about to made in the Roman Catholic pastorship in this district—tiie llev Father Ityan leaves, and his place will be taken by the Rev Father Grogan, ot Napier. The latter gentleman has arrived, and is now at Hawera.

Mr K. A. Adams is holding a monster e’earing sale of drapery and clothing, previous to removing into bis new premises.

Messrs Skelley & Co., in order to make room for new shipments, are offering great bargains in drapery and clothing.

Hailstorm, Mr Powdrell’s thoroughbred, left by the Patcai’or Wellington yesterday.

The libel case—Anderson v luirkbridc—has terminated in favor of defendant.

The Carlyle correspondent of the Wanganui Herald cannot imagine a paper conducted with less ability than the Patka Mail. Perhaps not; but it is not always wise for people to say what they think. We would not care to insert in this journal what we think of the correspondent in question. It might make him blush. The rod is in pickle, however, and it may have to be used.

The Patka Mail charger lias fared badly during 1 the past week. On Sunday morning, finding that the gate of Ids paddock bad an opening in it, lie took it into bis head to nave an airing ; but, unfortunately, lie bad no sooner got outside than be met Constable O'Brien, wbo, with promises of good faro, induced him to visit Mr 11, I. Davis, wbo keeps a secure paddock for wandering horses. Five shillings was all that, was recpiired to induce that horse to come out again ; besides which, the owner iiad au intcrWew with the i?.M. yesterday on the matter, and was fined 3s and 7s costs. Fifteen shillings for a horse wishing to air himself is rather too much, besides (laying 2s Gd a week for paddocking. The Ordinance under which cattle arc impounded says that the owners “shall be” liable to a lino, not must he lined ; therefore we think a little discretionary power should be used by the .Magistrate. In cases of accident, the impounding fee is quite sufficient, without being compelled to attend Court for the purpose of being fined.—W. Colson and J. Adamson were charged with similar offences, and were treated the same.
