A vary pleasant day was spent on New Year’s Day. at the above Society's annual sports meeting, which was 1 1 e 1 ! in .Mr il. I. Davis’ paddock, Carlyle. The day, tintwil[islanding that the morning looked threatening, turned out beautifully line, and about oUO spectators were on the ground during the afternoon. As with Hawera, the present meeting v.-;m far before anv preceding one, and, though there is room for great improvement in the management, the oilHe-hcarers of the Soeiei v deserve great praise fur the m■inner in which they did their duty. A few com plaints ware heard on the ground as to the unfairness ol! the handicaps, bn:, taken as a whole, very little exception could reasonably be taken to them. It might be well to suggest, that, in order to gel the sports over in reasonable time, lower events he put on the programme next year, as peop'e get tired before add the events come oil’, and often leave the ground. Tim suggestion, it; carried out, will doubt lew be approved of, and will be the means of making the meeting more success, id.
