The above sports were held on Thursday (New Year’s Day), on the Cricket Ground, and altough the weather did not look promising during lire morning, the day turned out all that could be desired tor athletic purposes. During; the afternoon, over 700 people were on the ground, including a large number ot the fair sex. Great praise is due to those gentlc-men who had the management of a Ilsurs, fui the very efficient manner in which they carried out their duties, as not a bitch occurred during the day to mar the proceedings, and the meeting is considered one of the best oi; the kind that has been held at Ilawera. The bandicapperasoem 1 o have given sati taction, as far as could be gathered on the ground. It will be seen that G. Marshall, of Wanganui, won the Gup, with 7 points ; Sheet second, with 5 points ; and Minnux third, with 3J- points. Vunghnu, at scratch, proved ton much for the other runners in the Mile Handicap, having won easily. Competitors from Wellington, Feilding, Wanganui, Carlyle, Jiawera, Stratford, Inglewood, and New Plymouth were present. The Hawera Brass Baud enlivened the proceedings through the day.
