SCHOOL EXAMINATION.

The annual examination of Carlyle School took place on Tuesday last, the 23rd inst., being conducted by B. Foulis, Escp, Inspector of Schools for the District of Wanganui. Several members of the School Committee were in attendance during the day, as also a sprinkling of visitors, all of whom expressed themselves highly pleased with the able and systematic manner in which the Inspector did Ins work. There are at present on the school roll 124 pupils, after deducting the names of those who have not attended at all, or at most only a few days, during the last quarter—that is, 68 boys and 56 girls, and as will bo seen by the following copy of the Inspector’s Report, 29 girls and 39 boys passed examination in their several Standards, a nmnberof pupils being also present who proved too young to be classed in the lowest Standard. STANDARD V. Arithmetic: R. Whelan, Ist; A. Paterson, 2nd. Geography : H. Wray and R. Whelan, equal in merit. History ; B, Whelan, Ist ; A. Paterson, 2nd. Composition : R. Whelan, Ist; H. Wray, 2nd. Intelligent Reading : H. Wray, Ist. Mental Arithmetic: R* Whelan, Ist. The following is the order.of merit, 200 marks being the highest attainable : R. Whelan, 185 marks ; A. Paterson, 170 marks; H. Wray, 145 marks; T. Dale, 136 marks ; Miss M. Dyer, 116 marks. Five pupils competed and passed. STANDARD IV. Arithmetic ; C. Wray, Ist ; Miss M. Ussher, 2nd. History : Miss J. Aitchison, Ist ; C. Wray, 2nd, Geography : Miss J, Aitchison, Ist; Miss M. Ussher and C. Wray, equal in merit. Mental Arithmetic : Miss M. Ussher, Ist. The following is the order of merit, 130 being the highest attainable : C. Wray, 101 marks ; Miss J. Aitchison. 99 marks ; Miss M. Ussher, 80 marks.
