Mr Foy, Government Railway Engineer, is supposed to be in tbe vacinity of Carlyle, awaiting orders to proceed with the branch lino. What a pity it is that the residents of this town cannot agree as to the site for a terminus Are they anxious that the sayings of the Wanganui Herald shall be verified —viz, that a lino should not be commenced here till communication is complete with that town and this, so that the trade of the Patea district can find its natural outlet at the Wanganui port. No doubt the proprietor of the journal referred to would, if he were still a member of the Ministry, do his utmost to prevent railway works being carried on towards Hawera from Carlyle, so that the very important town of Wanganui might become rich by the industry of a people that are in no way flattered to find that the Port of Wanganui is the natural outlet for our trade. Surely the Herald must be joking, for we anticipate that the Port of Patea will eventually become the natural outlet of the Wanganui trade We do not joke when we make this assertion, for it is much more likely to be accomplished than that the Patea trade will find its way to Wanganui. Fight on ye monsters — Wanganui on the one side and New Plymouth on the other—in spite of ye, the Patea District will yet outstrip ye in importance, if that is not done already. New Plymouth does not wish to see the railway completed from Hawera to Carlyle ; and Wanganui is extremely anxious that Waverley should not be joined to us by rail till such time as it would suit the convenience of the merchant princes of that town. We are certainly between two fires ; but one thing we feel proud of, and that is this—Mr Ballance, although he may have the wish, has not the power to keep us out of our just dues any longer.
