Surely the Herald must be joking, for we anticipate that the Port of Patea will eventually become the natural outlet of the Wanganui trade We do not joke when we make this assertion, for it is much more likely to be accomplished than that the Patea trade will find its way to Wanganui. Fight on ye monsters — Wanganui on the one side and New Plymouth on the other—in spite of ye, the Patea District will yet outstrip ye in importance, if that is not done already. New Plymouth does not wish to see the railway completed from Hawera to Carlyle ; and Wanganui is extremely anxious that Waverley should not be joined to us by rail till such time as it would suit the convenience of the merchant princes of that town. We are certainly between two fires ; but one thing we feel proud of, and that is this—Mr Ballance, although he may have the wish, has not the power to keep us out of our just dues any longer.
