It appeal’s from the Estimates, ns wo indicated in our last issue, that the Government really mean to push on, and, if possible, lo finish the Baton-Waitara Railway during next year. Wo spoke despoudingly on the subject in our leader on the Public Works Statement. “ Hope deferred makoth the heart sick.” We thought that the reference to the “ strategic” value of our lino was only a sop to keep us quiet. Wo rejoice to think that wo were wrong. Extensive railway works will, of course, mean a return of brisk times to the district, and will also mean that a depression similar to the present will not easily occur again. The lino will hasten settlement in the neighborhoods where it is must required, and will overcome one of the chief obstacles to speedy success in a Native war, should one be necessary —namely, transport. It will also so far increase the value of all property, that any tax thereon ought to he borne with comparative cheerfulness.
