HAWERA.

("from our own correspondent.) December 8. CRICKET—HAWERA v. CLIFTON. On Saturday, the 29th ultimo, the majority of the Hawera team started for White Cliffs, and were met on Sunday at 2 o’clock by two traps at Waitara. The beautiful scenery between Waitara and the White Cliffs was fully appreciated, and the journey was very pleasant, notwithstanding several hills that had to be walked up and down. They arrived about 6 o’clock, very hungry; and after a good dinner, retired to a tent that had been set apart for the visitors’ use. On talking over the battle on the morrow, the captain informed his men that if they liked to play, they could win, and he was right. After a good night’s rest, all hands were startled from their sleep by an unearthly shriek from a bugle, when a hasty breakfast was made, and the visiting team walked over to the cricket ground to inspect. All were quite satisfied, the pitch being perfect, and as smooth as a billiard table. At 9 o’clock the two teams were on the ground, and the captains ’tossed. Clifton winning, the visitors were put in first. Goring and Cowper, for Hawera, took the willow, but the former was bowled by F. Bayly before he had scored. Farrington followed, and the pair stood for some time, until Cowper was run out. Foley filled his place, when shortly after Farrington was caught. Smith filled the vacancy, and then came the runs. The bowlers were changed, but to no purpose, Until Foley was run out for a, well played 52. His place was filled by G. Bayly, but his brother very quickly found a weak

place in his defence. Riddiford was in i very short time, when Smith retired (caught), playing a good innings for 26: Lysaght filled the vacancy, but had to retire very shortly. D’Alton did the same. Wanklyn made a hit -for one, and then spooned one to long off. Mason was the last man, and was bowled after making 6, Riddiford carrying his, bat out for 19. The innings closed for 145 runs. A. good lunch was on the ground, and was quickly despatched. The Ciiftonians then took the willow, but the bowling of the visitors was too much for the first 6 or 8, Cleary and Farquason being the only two that made a Stand, each making 17. The latter played a remarkably patient innings, being at the wicket one hour and a quarter. They were all disposed of for 81. It being a two days match, the Haweras had to go in again with 64 to their credit. Foley* Farrington, and Riddiford obtained double figures, and at 5 o’clock the innings closed for 85, thus leaving the Ciiftonians 150 to win; In the morning work was again coinnldiced at 9 o’clock, but at 11.30 the innings had closed for 123, thus leaving the visitors 27 to the good. The fielding of the Hawera team throughout was very good, but the Ciiftonians (svho last season were remarkable for their good fielding) at times was very. Incise. Mr S. Adau»3mr“ was umpire and Mr (4. V. Borte scorer for the Haweras; Mr Silver umpired for th** Clifton; The weather on both, days was all that colild be desired for cricket, and the Constabulary Fife and Drum Band was on the ground enlivening the players, with their sweet music. The Hawera men challenged the Wan-, ganui Club for next Saturday to play oil their own ground* but a telegram arrived this morning saying that the Wanganui men could not play on Saturday, as they were going to Marlon. I have no doubt a match be arranged for some future tiifie; Messrs Southey and Willey are about to start a saw mill on the Mountain Road* having obtained a good block of land from the Government. The machinery is on the way from Wailara and I have no doubt in a short time they will be in full working order. I hope they will get their share of public support.
