(2b the Editor of the Patea Mail.)
Sir, —Your Waver ley correspondent’s last letter takes note of a Town H dl meeting held here. May Ibe allowed to make some remarks in reference thereto.
Public meetings here are frequently of a very arbitrary character ; their ostensible object is not uolifi-d, in consequence full interest creative of attendance is wanting, and scarcely any are there save and except the obtrusive ami dogmatic few. A meeting of this kind was again held re the - Town Hall yearly management, wh-m a numerous gathering of peopie were present(six in number). After some little hilarity with respect to the largo balance in hand (four shillings and a penny) for the convngyear, and then electing the yearly com--mittee, they (four of them) proceeded to* elect from their number and kindredfriends the trusteeship not only for thebuilding and land on which 1 it stands, butthe whole of the Town Hall reserve, which I may mention consists of three valuable building lots, and now seek of the Hon - John Bryce to assent to and ratify ■ thoseprecious proceedings in conclave. But one of the gentlemen I see named did take to himself this trusteeship irv years that are past,- and he would now accept the tiust he then so ostentatiously and arrogantly claimed. I remember that he invited meetings three ; he graciously conceded to others lire yearly management from his-lofty stool told us the deoil of trust was in a cottage hard by ; and toldns what he desired we should believe.Would it be unfair to say of those meetingsthat they were ludicrously bogus oims ;r and should nut the last be classed with* them ? Will the townspeople tamely admit of their endowment being hung up so completely by outsiders (for none ol them araresidents in tne township) ; if so, they will* find, when wanting, that they have unvoice in its disposal,- and their desiresignored.—L am, &c., OBSERVER. Waver!ey, November 1. [The above letter was in type for lastissue, but was pressed out at the last moment. —Ed. Mail.] ■i.jl ifiiJiP’wiwßimwrPßLlMgrt -
