SNIDER RIFLES FOR PATEA.
Tins following letter to Captain Black speaks for itself : Wellington, 31st October, 1879. My Dear Sir, — I regret that I have been unable to reply to your note of the 28th ultimo at an earlier date, but I have not neglected the matter of arming the Volunteers in your district with new rifles. I found there were in store 323 Snider rifles, which I had immediately issued, 150 to Patca, and, 173 to New Plymouth. Two thousand stand of Snider swordbayonet rifles arc expected in the colony within six months from now, when they will be forwarded at once to'the volunteers in native districts. I sincerely hope we shall not find it necessary to have resort to offensive operations at all, and that pacific measures may prevail in any difficulty. Assuring yon of the pleasure* it gives me to be of service to you ami your district,
Believe mo, Yours very truly, 11. A. Atkinson,
