WAVERLEY.
(From oar own Correspondent.) September 16. The election excitement being now over, I suppose yon will expect to hear front -me, although Waverley is now a good instance of the calm that is said to follow the storm, it having been for the last week unusually quiet—and “ dull times these,” is generally substituted for the time honored “fine dav.” The Waverley Rifles paraded on Saturday for target preef ice, for the first time, and there was a good muster on the Range. The following scores must be taken as an earnest of what they could do if supplied with serviceable arms and ammunition, which aic now about as bad ns they could bo. In many of the rifles the grooves are i worn completely smooth, and would there- 1 fore be comparatively useless even if loaded 1 with good ammunition. Unfortunately I the latter is as bad, if not worse, than the i
rifles. Several rounds were examined-by Captain Hawes* and found not to contain a single grain of powder. The men are very dissatisfied about it, although they muster well on parades, and take much interest in their drill. It is to be hoped that the Government will remember that Waverley has been most active in making the volunteer movement a success, and will allow them their share of Sniders, if they cannot arm the whole Company with them. If even a few were sent, to be distributed according to the judgment of the Captain, it would give great satisfaction to the Corps. The following are a few of the scores made on Saturday ;
