At the enquiry into origin of late fire, a man named Jolly, working at the Herald , who passed through the Octagon a quarter of an hour before the lire broke out, deposed to having noticed a light as of caudle being curried from one room to another. After further evidence Inspector Mallard said he would not undertake the responsibility of allowing Waters, cafe proprietor, to be at large that night. He was therefore put in lock-up, though not formally arrested for arson. He made an appeal to Coroner not to detain him at that late hour, when he could not get bail. The Coroner said if bail was forthcoming he could not take it. Waters was formally charged with arson to-day, and remanded till Monday. The police produced evidence to show that several local offices refused to take risk oh cafe stock and contents, which was not worth £l5O.
