Some hapless teamster, anxious to avoid the mud on tho Hawera side of tho Manawapou, kept too near the edge, and the result is that the dray and its scattered cargo lie at the bottom of the gully, the observed of all observers. In another column will be found the pedegree of the entire horse Puriri, lately imported by Mr R. E. Mcßae, of Kakaramea. Speaking of the excellence of the stud horses on the West Coast of this Island, a Wellington exchange says:— “ Messrs Mcßae and Nicholson, of Kakaramea, have been the chief people who have gone to great expense in this respect, but we are sorry to say that their enterprise has been but poorly rewarded. A short time ago they had Dead Shot, one of the best Traducer sires in the colony ; but he, unfortunately, was taken amiss, and died during the last season. Mcßae and Nicholson have not, however, allowed the grass to grow under their feet, for they have purchased from Mr Redwood his very highly-bred horse Puriri, by Towton from Waimea, the dam of Manuka, Papapo, Totara, and others, the finest equine samples that New Zealand ever saw. Puriri is one of her best, and in his day has been a grand preformer. He is an even chestnut of some 16 hands, and won the Derby at Dunedin two years ago, ran third for the Dunedin Cup at the same meeting, beating some sixteen others, and won the Leger at the Canterbury meeting of the same year. The Patea public may congratulate themselves on having such an excellent addition to their stud horses.
