LATEST TELEGRAMS.
(Per Press Agency) WELLINGTON. Septembers. A writ has been issued by Mr Travers, solicitor, at the suit of W. Clarke, C.8., against Curie, Anderson, and Anderson, owners of Chronicle, for libel. Three •counts, in declaration, on each plaintiff claims £I,OOO damage. Cause of action is the publication of several false statements. Messages have been received that Tole defeated Whitalctr for Eden.
Macandrew has been returned for Por£ Chalmers, Tho following appears in the Ashburton Evening fferald :—“We aro able to give substance of telegram despatched by member of Government, intended for Mr Ing’es, Kdkoura (gentleman contesting Cheviot seat with Mr Alfred Saunders), but which through some blunder of Telegraph Department was delivered to Mrs Ingles, of Kaikoiira, Hawke’s Hay'. Following is telegram :— 1 Will yon contest Cheviot with Saunders on the platform of the Governor’s speech. Onr part}' will give you all the supnort we can, and if you cons'-nl, your claim for consideration shall receive attention, whether you are successful or not. — Whitmore.’ ” Certain telegram published at Ashburton, purporting to be one from Whitmore to Ingles, with regard to opposing Saunders for Cheviot, is audio: natively stated not to be copy of Whitmore’s telegram, but materially altered. NELSON. September 5. It was expected Shepherd would be returned unopposed for Waimea, but Curtis and Acton .Adams, candidates for Nelson, wore proposed without their knowl£sge.
