VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The return rifle match between Nos. 1 and

2 Companies Patea Rities came off at the range on Saturday afternoon last. The day was beautifully and fine, which induced several ladies to visit the scene of contest. The firing throughout was very fair, and with a little more practice our volunteers will be able to do battle against Taranaki or Wanganui. A three-leaf-target was used, and the positions were—--200 yards, standing ; 300 yards, kneeling ; 400 yards, any. Ten men a aide. The following is the result:— No. 1 Company.

401 Majority for No. 2 Co., 9 points In Gazettee of the 28th August, the following appointments appear:— Palm Light Horse. William Cowern to be Captain. A. 0. Croft to be Honorary Assistant Surgeon. Commissions to date from the 9th July, 1879. Carlyle Rifles — No. 1 Company. John Black to be Captain. P. M. Chapman to be Lieutenant. Commissions to date from the 18th August, 1879.
