TURNER, y Claim £i, for Boots supplied to the following order:—“Mr Rhodes, please give Naru Po a pair of boots to the amount of £1 6s.—H. T. Turner.” Plaintiff stated that Turner having refused to pay the amount, he had summoned him, under the impression that as he was in the habit of acting as business agent for bis father (Major Turner), be was liable. To evade payment, the following plea was put in :—“ In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, bolden at Carlyle. Between James Rhodes, of Carlyle, Bootmaker, plaintiff, and Thomas Turner, Whenuakura, Settler, defendant. Monday, the lllh day of August, 1879. As a plea to the plaintiff’s summons, the defendant says he is an infant under the age of 21 years.” The R.M. (Captain Wray), while condemning the action of defendant in refusing payment of his acknowledged order, said the law left him no other course than to give judgment in his favor. JAMES RHODES, Bootmaker, Carlyle. Carlyle Volunteer Fire Brigade. VOLUNTARY Subscriptions are respectfully solicited from the inhabitants of Carlyle, towards the Funds of the above. The Members of the Brigade wish to commence Practice at once; they require means to purchase Plant, &c., for the purpose of carrying out the object for which the Brigade was formed, viz., The protection and saving of life and property, from fire. , When the public of Carlyle know that Funds are required for such a purpose, the Brigade Committee feel satisfied that the required assistance will not be long wanting.
