WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) August 22. Mr Ballance met the electors last night, soon after 7 p.m. A crowd assembled round the Hall door, and on it being opened, quite a rush took place. Before the noise incident to rushes had subsided, and before the gentleman who kindly took the trouble to light the Hall had completed his work, Mr Bridge proposed that Mr Kenah take the chair. Mr Mason proposed as an amendment that Mr Fookes take t’>c chair, Mr Kenah claimed than being the first proposed, he bad the right to put the question to the meeting ; he did so, and declared himself duly elected Chairman. Mr Ballance spoke for upwards of two hours, during which he explained his conduct as to the Land Tax, “ leaving his post,” throwing up Rangitikei, &c., apparently to the satisfaction ol the electors, as the vote of confidence proposed by Mr Fookes was carried by a majority of 15 or 16. There were about 170 present, Sir W. Fox being one. Mr Bridge raised a rather interesting question when the confidence motion was proposed, Mr Mason seconded it, and Mr Bridge asked if lie (Mr M.) was on the roll. A roll was obtained, when it was found that the name was spelt incorrectly, but that the qualification was undoubtedly that of Mr Mason. Mr Kenah ruled that Mr Mason's name was not on the roll. Mr Thomas therefore seconded the motion.

The feeding here is undoubtedly in Ballance’s favor.
