The Patea Light Horse will meet at the Albion Hotel this evening, at 7 o’clock. The Carlyle Harmonic Society’s quarterly concert will take place at the Town Hall, on Thursday evening next.

The Rev Mr Lee, of Wanganui, will officiate in the Carlyle Wesleyan Church to-morrow*—morning and evening. The Rev P. W. Fairclough will take Mr Lee’s place in Wanganui. We learn that Major Roberts, of Okotuku notoriety, is on his way to relieve Major Noake of the command of this district.

The following telegram from Now Plymouth, dated June 27, was kindly handed to us yesterday by Major Brown, for publication :—“ The Oakura natives have been stopped ploughing. Their ploughs were taken from them, cattle turned loose, and the owners left squatting on the land. A scrimmage has taken place at Urenui, on native land, between Jane Brown (halfcaste) aud some natives. Nothing important happened.” ,-r ■■ r At the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, held on Wednesday last, a letter was read from the Carlyle School Committee, applying for a male assistant teacher for the High School to be established here. After much discussion, it was finally resolved, That the Secretary reply to the Committee, informing them that theBoard have no eligible teacher at present, but that they will consider the question at their next meeting. Forty-two newly-enlisted A.C.’s passed through Carlyle on Thursday, en route for the front, having done the distance from Wanganui on foot. With a little drill, we should imagine these men w*ould show to advantage in the field,, as nearly the whole of them appear to be young aud hardy.

Mr W. Cowcrn will sell the leases of the Patea Wharves, to-day ; also bran and pollard. Mr James Hirst arrived from New ;Plymouth yesterday, having travelled the coast road. He met a great many Maoris on their way to Parihaka, but was very civilly treated by all; in fact they appear to be enjoying the present state of affairs immensely.

“ Kahore the breeches ” is what one of the Livingstone-Maori ploughmen (a Wai kato) said to Mr M. D. King-at Hawera, yesterday; and he helped himself to a pair. The police were called in, and the poor ignorant Maori was taken to the lock-up., We understand that Captain Wray has telegraphed to Hawera to have the prisoner sent on here. He arrived last night, and will give an account of himself in the , E.M. Court before the coach leaves for Wanganui this morning. A telegram was received from a, gentleman at Hawera to the effect that the Maoris had commenced ploughing at Mr G. Bayly ? s, Mokoia. We have made every enquiry into the. matter from those who came down from TSawera during the day, but nothing was seen of the ploughmen, and it is believed to be a mistake.. The natiyea are ploughing, or are about to . plough, " Bayly’s land at Wai-iti—thirty miles north of New Plymouth—and perhaps this has something to do with the runipuy. On the strength of the telegram, several’ people loft here for the scene of action.

Mr Dale will sell the stock-in-trade of the Oeo Hotel 'and store, together with the household furniture, this day, at Carlyle. The sal wifi be continued oh Monday. Through -some ifiisunderstanding, the election of a member to represent the Hawera Hiding in the Count}' Council, fell through bn Wednesday';' therefore fresh nominations will have to be taken.

On Sunday evening Honi Piharna left Normanby for the purpose of bringing Captain Good’s and Mr Beamish’s families in from Oco to Hawera, it-not being considered safe by Major Brown that-they should remain there any longer. On Honi’s arrival at Oeo, a consultation took place, and it was detennined to wait until drays could be. brought from Hawera to shift goods and furniture away. , Accordingly a telegram was sent to Mr Beamish (who ; was in Nbw Plymouth) to return, and one to Mr Dale at Carlyle, to bring drays at puce. , On his arrival at, Hawera. Mr Dale experienced considerable difficulty in getting carters to undertake the work, some of them not being willing to go unless a- Strong 'escort was . provided. However,- after a deal of persuasion six drays made a start on Tuesday morning, and returned to Hawera on Wednesday, bringing hi piost jpf goods without being' molested by the natives!! Captain Good’s family, wo. understand, -have gone fo Opuhnke.- Mr Beamish has had to leave a large number of stock behind, 1 which are running with cattle belonging to the Oeo 1 natives, . :..j ■

People must telegraph, even if they have to pay double rates—and it is impossible to get a message away now without this is done. It is, rather astonishing how the double rate baa the desired effect—but such is the-case. Perhaps Government find that by occupying thgline day after day for the purpose of transmitting a lot of useless nonsense (we,presume that nothing else would take up 1 bo. much time), the revenue is considerably increased,- and we should advise them to .continue the game a little longer 1 \ ' v •
